In one of Chicago’s newest Class A office towers at 320 S Canal, a confidential client sets out to create a dynamic, multi-purpose environment, one that could seamlessly adapt to the evolving demands of the modern workplace.

At the core of this unique application is the integration of two Skyfold Zenith 55 vertically folding operable walls alongside a Modernfold Acousti-Clear system. Together, these systems transform a single footprint into a versatile suite of spaces that can be configured throughout the day to meet a variety of needs.

The layout allows the multi-purpose area to function as one large open room, two medium-sized rooms, or three separate conference spaces.

A key design feature is how the two Skyfold walls close directly against the Modernfold Acousti-Clear system, creating a clean, functional division.

The Modernfold panels that interface with the Skyfold system are finished in a plastic laminate that convincingly mimics wood veneer, adding warmth and sophistication to the space. The Skyfold walls themselves serve as a striking centrepiece- each measuring 23 feet wide by 11 feet tall and finished in Designtex Octave 5631-802 Melisma fabric.

One of the most significant advantages of the Skyfold system is its ability to be stored overhead. Unlike traditional floor-based operable walls that require dedicated storage pockets, this solution preserves the full usable footprint of the room when the walls are retracted.

This project is the result of a collaboration effort between IA Interior Architects, Mortenson Construction, and Modernfold Chicago.

This installation stands as a strong example of how thoughtful design and advanced operable wall systems can come together to create a workplace that is not only beautiful but purpose-built for the way people work today.
